Started in 2001, the Dot NAME generic extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. Initially, just third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained active.
